## 1. Modern Elder Academy (MEA)

**Sources:** [MEA](https://www.meawisdom.com/) · [Career Transitions on demand](https://www.meawisdom.com/midlife-career-transitions-on-demand/) · [current enrollment](https://www.meawisdom.com/enroll/)

- **Audience/job:** accomplished adults in midlife whose work, identity, family or meaning is shifting.
- **Free entry:** Midlife Pathfinder / What’s Calling You Next quizzes, editorial, podcast, stories and sessions.
- **First paid step:** `Career Transitions: Ignite Possibility`, $97, lifetime access, three 90-minute recorded sessions and reflections.
- **Ascension:** `Navigating Transitions Online` $795 → in-person workshops around $2,800–$4,400 → alumni ecosystem.
- **Commercial signal:** company reports 9,000+ alumni, 60 countries and 60 regional chapters; premium workshop inventory is publicly priced. This is operational evidence, not audited revenue.
- **Founder leverage:** Chip Conley drives authority and media, while faculty, recordings, campus teams and alumni deliver much of the experience.
- **Lesson:** this is the closest structural benchmark for Cosmos: diagnostic entry → finite self-paced first purchase → higher-level presence/community.
- **Limit:** MEA’s $97 product is still video-content-heavy. Cosmos can differentiate through a generated personal map and real experiment rather than three long lessons.

## 2. Designing Your Life

**Sources:** [Designing Your Life](https://designingyour.life/) · [coach certification](https://designingyour.life/certification/)

- **Audience/job:** people designing work/life choices with design-thinking tools; broad, not women-only.
- **Entry:** books, newsletter, articles, public talks and exercises.
- **Paid ladder:** workshops delivered by the core organization and partners → retreats / enterprise programs → coach certification.
- **Certification:** research found a public price of $2,100 plus a prerequisite; annual renewal $500 for community, directory and IP benefits. Partner women’s Rome retreat surfaced at $3,600 for up to 16 participants. Exact availability should be rechecked before quoting publicly.
- **Leverage:** the founders converted a recognizable method into books, exercises, certification, directory and partner delivery.
- **Lesson:** a proprietary visual method becomes scaleable when its steps, outputs and QA are explicit. For Cosmos, certification is a later option only after the Gateway repeatedly produces value.

## 3. The Life Coach School

**Sources:** [The Life Coach School](https://thelifecoachschool.com/) and current product pages found during the 2026 review.

- **Entry:** podcast and free Self-Coaching Model guide.
- **Founder-free paid entry:** `The Coaching Sessions`, $597, 52 recorded sessions available immediately. A subscription named `Unsupervised` was publicly stated at $29/month during the review.
- **Backend:** coach certification; current public certification price was not verified and is not asserted.
- **Leverage:** a named canonical model, large recorded corpus and certification.
- **Lesson:** founder voice can be packaged once and sold repeatedly, but recording volume alone does not create a transition outcome. Cosmos should use Margarita’s voice as selected AudioBoosts, not as an enormous pre-LumoSide library.

## 4. Martha Beck / Wayfinder

**Sources:** [Martha Beck](https://marthabeck.com/) · [Wayfinder Life Coach Training](https://marthabeck.com/wayfinder-life-coach-training/)

- **Entry:** books, podcast, articles and free toolkits.
- **Core/high-ticket:** Wayfinder Life Coach Training. Public prices found in the review: regular $16,375, early bird $14,875; Master Coach Training $14,950; application fee $150.
- **Retention/leverage:** cohorts, certified-coach identity, directory, advanced training and licensed intellectual property.
- **Commercial signal:** high live public prices and repeated certification cohorts demonstrate transaction capacity, but public revenue was not found.
- **Lesson:** the major economic engine can eventually become training others to deliver a method. It is not the first step for Cosmos and would contradict the current desire to preserve method integrity before it is validated.

## 5. Mindvalley

**Sources:** [Mindvalley](https://www.mindvalley.com/)

- **Entry:** free content, masterclasses and pathway quiz.
- **First/core transaction:** annual membership publicly surfaced at $499/year ($41.50/month expressed as annual equivalent during review).
- **Scale signal:** company claims 1M+ members and 100+ mentors; these are company-reported, not audited revenue.
- **Expansion:** certifications, events and business/enterprise products.
- **Retention:** app habit, constantly expanding catalog, community and events.
- **Founder dependence:** low in delivery; the founder remains a brand/media asset among many teachers.
- **Lesson:** a broad library can scale once brand, catalog and acquisition are already huge. It is a poor starting model for Cosmos: too much content, unclear individual completion and high production pressure.

## 6. The School of Life

**Sources:** [The School of Life](https://www.theschooloflife.com/) · product and app listings checked in the research.

- **Entry:** very large editorial/video reach.
- **Low-ticket founder-free objects:** `A Job to Love` £9.99; `Career Workbook` £19.99; `Career Therapy Collection` £40 during the review.
- **Digital:** personalized app with quiz-driven feed, free download/trial and in-app purchases.
- **Ascension:** books/card decks → app → therapy/events/retreats → business programs.
- **Scale signal:** brand reports 9M users/participants across books, games, films, therapy, events and retreats. This aggregated number is not equivalent to paid users.
- **Leverage:** distinctive IP, physical artifacts, app personalization, distributed practitioners and enterprise work.
- **Lesson:** the first purchase can be a beautiful bounded object rather than a course. For Cosmos, the `Between Identities Map` and a guided digital workbook can feel like an authored artifact rather than SaaS or coaching homework.

## 7. BetterUp

**Sources:** [BetterUp](https://www.betterup.com/)

- **Model:** predominantly B2B; research and thought leadership lead to enterprise sales.
- **Core:** human coaching plus always-on AI coaching integrated into work tools.
- **Scale signal:** company reports 750+ enterprise customers and 4,000+ coaches in 70+ countries; pricing is custom.
- **Leverage:** coach marketplace, software, AI, account teams, Slack/Teams/Workday integrations; founder is not delivery bottleneck.
- **Lesson:** B2B scale comes from measurable organizational outcomes and workflow integration. Cosmos should not offer employer programs until it can report aggregate outcomes from the consumer Gateway.

## 8. Chief

**Sources:** [Chief](https://chief.com/) · [membership](https://chief.com/membership)

- **Audience:** highly qualified senior women leaders.
- **Entry:** thought leadership, events and selective application.
- **Core transaction:** annual membership; current price is not public. Historical funding: $100M Series B at $1.1B valuation in 2022, which is not current revenue or valuation.
- **Coaching adjunct:** the third research stream found public coaching prices of $250 for two 30-minute matching sessions (credited toward a package), then $4,900/6 months, $7,900/6 months and $13,250/12 months. These should be rechecked at point of use because coaching pages and prices can change.
- **Leverage:** guides/coaches, peer groups, events, courses and company-sponsored seats.
- **Lesson:** affluent executive women pay for confidentiality, selection, status-safe peers and access. Cosmos can serve the interval in which a woman’s previous achievement is real but her current title no longer expresses her.

## 9. Ellevest

**Sources:** [Ellevest](https://www.ellevest.com/)

- **Entry:** women-specific money/career education, calculators and quiz.
- **First current transaction:** standalone planning $4,800/year.
- **Core:** wealth management from $500K investable assets; private wealth from $1M; tiered AUM fee 1.25%–0.35% according to public schedule.
- **Commercial signal:** company reports more than $1B AUM; AUM is client assets, not revenue.
- **Anti-pattern:** automated investing was discontinued in April 2025. A cheap automated front product is not automatically a strategic engine when regulatory and service costs are high.
- **Lesson:** high-value recurring economics come from an ongoing consequential job, not from education itself. Cosmos must treat Gateway as outcome validation, while LumoSide requires a real repeating job to sustain retention.

## 10. iRelaunch

**Sources:** [iRelaunch](https://www.irelaunch.com/) · [Return to Work Roadmap](https://www.irelaunch.com/relaunchers/return-to-work-roadmap)

- **Entry:** weekly report, jobs, sample resumes, podcast and Power Hour.
- **Self-guided core:** proprietary Relaunch Readiness Assessment; five phases, 30 steps, worksheets, podcasts and videos. Current price is not public and was not guessed.
- **Expansion:** referrals to coaches/resume services, events and employer returnship consulting.
- **Commercial signal:** company reports 125K+ community, 330+ employer partners, 11,500+ Roadmap users and acquisition by Akraya; acquisition price is undisclosed.
- **Leverage:** named methodology, digital curriculum and B2B employer network.
- **Lesson:** concrete stages and outputs make a transition process self-guided. Cosmos can apply this architecture before job search, at the identity/decision interval.

## Cross-company patterns

### 1. Founder-free first transactions cluster into five forms

1. **Book/workbook/card deck:** cheap, concrete, giftable; limited personalization.
2. **Recorded finite product:** clear completion; risk of passive consumption.
3. **Assessment-led self-guided route:** strongest fit for a personal transition because answers alter the path.
4. **App/subscription:** works only when the job naturally repeats frequently.
5. **Annual membership:** works when access, identity, network or continuously updated utility is obvious.

For Cosmos the strongest combination is **assessment-led finite route + generated personal artifact + scheduled experiment**, not a generic course or immediate membership.

### 2. Assessment is usually routing, not the paid product

MEA, iRelaunch, Mindvalley and app businesses use quizzes to segment, personalize and move the user to the relevant product. The assessment alone rarely carries enough value for a substantial price.

Therefore:

- free: Transition Check-in and first Map;
- paid: deeper map, scenarios, experiment builder and evidence review.

### 3. Economic engines sit behind the entry product

Across mature companies, major economics tend to come from:

- certification and IP licensing;
- premium coaching or clinical/regulated service;
- retreats/events;
- enterprise contracts;
- AUM/reimbursement;
- large-scale recurring subscription.

A $49–$149 digital Gateway can validate demand and create customers, but is unlikely by itself to become a very large company without LumoSide retention, larger volume, B2B or a future licensed methodology.

### 4. Retention comes from a recurring job

Effective retention loops include:

- daily/weekly app utility;
- peer group and scheduled meetings;
- directory/status/credential renewal;
- longitudinal care;
- alumni identity and events;
- continuously relevant life-stage tracking;
- workflow integration.

A passive content library has weak retention. For LumoSide, the repeating job must be: **return to the chosen season, notice evidence, and recalibrate the next experiment while receiving Margarita’s broadcasts**.

### 5. Ways companies reduce founder dependence

- named proprietary methodology;
- canonical recorded curriculum;
- automated assessment and routing;
- standardized outputs;
- coach/facilitator certification;
- directory/matching;
- community managers;
- guest experts;
- software and AI;
- licensed partners;
- enterprise account teams.

For Cosmos now: methodology + automation + standardized artifacts. Certification/facilitators are future options, not current requirements.

### 6. Typical product errors

- selling abstract transformation before a concrete diagnosis/output;
- making founder webinar the conversion gate;
- launching subscription without a repeatable job;
- creating community before moderation economics are clear;
- confusing high-ticket price with high margin;
- offering no next step after a self-guided product;
- hiding the price of an automated product;
- producing a huge library before observing what users actually complete;
- making AI or symbolism the decision authority.

---

## Implications for Cosmos Luminosity

### Recommended ladder

> **Free Transition Check-in → free Between Identities Map → paid self-guided Gateway → automated Evidence Review → LumoSide broadcasts**

### What the first paid product should borrow

- from MEA: a clearly priced finite first purchase;
- from iRelaunch: stages, assessment and concrete steps;
- from The School of Life: beautiful authored artifact rather than generic e-learning;
- from Flo/Mindvalley: personalization and a return loop, without manufacturing daily addiction;
- from Chief: status-safe language and privacy;
- from Designing Your Life: scenarios and small experiments;
- from Ellevest: respect for consequential decisions and clear scope boundaries.

### What it should not borrow

- giant Mindvalley-style library;
- Chief-style human-heavy peer groups before LumoSide;
- founder webinar dependence;
- return-to-work tactical positioning;
- invisible pricing;
- certification before method validation;
- expensive physical footprint;
- subscription before repeat usage is proven.

## Source-integrity note

Prices are point-in-time observations from direct product pages or the completed research stream and must be rechecked before public comparison. Company-reported users, alumni, members and clients are identified as such. No revenue has been inferred from user counts, funding, valuation or AUM.
